The new wild swimming lake in Beckenham Place Park was officially opened on Saturday (20 July) ... and five days later it is already closed.
Lewisham Council announced in a statement and on Twitter that the Beckenham Place Park is closed to the public and "is expected to be closed for a few days and will be reopened as soon as possible."
While the entire park is closed, the reason for the closure concerns the new bathing lake - visitor numbers have far exceeded expectations, undoubtedly aided by the current mild weather, and "as with any open water facility, we must do this to ensure that that people can have a good time ".
News Shopper reports that a child was hospitalized on Monday morning after an incident at the lake.
We temporarily close Beckenham Place Park.We are pleased that a large number of visitors enjoyed the new facilities. However, we must ensure that people can enjoy themselves around the new lake.

There is a temporary fencing around the lake. There is a small charge for entering the sea area. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the lake's opening hours as soon as it's up and running again.
The closure is one day after it was feared that three swimmers would be dead after being missed swimming in different parts of the Thames.
